WINE 101

Wine Basics or Wine 101

What is Wine?

Wine is an alcoholic beverage made with the fermented juice of grapes. Technically, wine can be made with any fruit (i.e. apples, cranberries, plums, etc) but most wines are made with wine grapes (which are different than table grapes).

What are “Wine Grapes”?

Wine grapes (the latin name is Vitis vinifera) are small, sweet, have thick skins, and contain seeds. There are over 1,300 identified, commercial wine grape varieties, but just about 150 of these varieties make up the majority of wine made in the world.  Most wines are made with a single species of grape that originated in Caucasus called Vitis vinifera (wine grapes). There are thousands of different varieties within the Vitis vinifera species–the most common is Cabernet Sauvignon.

What is Cabernet Sauvignon?

In the seventeenth century in southwestern France, an accidental breeding occurred between a red Cabernet Franc grape plant and a white Sauvignon Blanc grape plant and thus was born the most popular grape among American wine drinkers: Cabernet Sauvignon.

What does Cabernet Sauvignon Taste Like?

Since Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in a wide range of climates and regions throughout the world it has varied flavors. Fundamentally speaking, Cab is a full-bodied red wine with dark fruit flavors and savory tastes from black pepper to bell pepper. Let’s take a look at two regions that make two very different styles of Cabernet Sauvignon to understand how the flavors differ.

We have 1 dog & 2 cats and yep, we're a little nuts!!
